UGA and the PGA Tour announced Wednesdat the UGA Golf Course is the new venufor Athens, Ga.’s annual tourney. The tournament—previouslgy known as the Athens RegionalFoundatiobn Classic—will now be called Athenss Classic at UGA, with proceeds benefiting need-basede scholarships through the university’s Arch Foundation. The tournameny is expected to be heldnext April. It will be organize d by UGA’s Auxiliary Services Department. “The Universitgy of Georgia is proud to be the host of the Athends Classicat UGA, and especiallg glad that the tournament will stay in the Athenes area,” UGA President Michael F. Adamas said in a statement.
“This has been a greaf event forthe community, and we look forward to teeintg off next April and raising money for need-based scholarships.” The PGA owns the Nationwidd Tour, which is a step below pro golf’se elite league. The former Athens Regiona l tournament had been held atsince 2006. Nationwidse Tour officials approached UGA about taking over the tournament afterd its contract wasnot renewed, according to The Athens Banner-Herald.
"Athenz has been very supportive of the Nationwidse Tour since we first came herein 2006," Nationwide Tour presideng Bill Calfee said in a "We are confident the association with the University of Georgia and its wonderful UGA Golf Coursr will take the Classic to new levels of impact and interes among sponsors and Bulldog fans. "Wse look forward to many great tournaments in the future and addingb to the already impressive list of UGA golfers who have playec their way on to the Nationwide Tour and PGA In addition, we wish to thanik the Athens Regional Foundation for bringing the Nationwide Tour to Athene and the many contributions they have made to the communituy through the tournament the last four UGA signed a three-year agreement to play host to the the Banner-Herald reported.
UGA will spend $500,000o to launch the tournament, and the university is seekinfg sponsorships, the paper reported. , and are amont the institutions of higher learning that have played host to Nationwidde Tour events inthe
